Water gardens are sometimes known as aquatic gardens, backyard ponds or garden ponds. Often referring to a man-made feature, these water gardens usually combine a pool with aquatic plants and ornamental fish in many cases. Fixed items including rocks, fountains, waterfalls, and other water features often are combined with the pool to help add more visual interest and to more easily integrate with the local environment and landscape .
There are basically two types of pond designs. These are the formal ponds and the informal ponds. Formal ponds are typically are shaped like a square, oval, rectangle or circle and are constructed of cement. Informal ponds, on the other hand, do not have any particular shape and they appear more natural, with plants growing around and in the ponds. Most garden ponds are classified as informal ponds.
