Aquarium Aeration and Pumps

Aquarium airpump
Aquarium air pump.

Airpumps

Air pumps have systems that are either driven by pistons or vibrators. Air pumps drive air through tubes where the air is then broken into smaller bubbles as it passes into an airstone or filter.

Vibrating air pumps are less expensive and require little maintenance, but they are not as powerful as piston driven types.

Airstones

An airstone helps to oxygenate the water by dispersing the air supplied by the pump. They are composed of wood-based materials or perforated ceramic.
